Dwarf Pink Breath of Heaven
Coleonema pulchellum ‘Dwarf Pink’
Another excellent South African native, colenema (also called Diosma) is not used much in the US for bonsai but it is popular in its native land. The tiny needle-like leaves give off the most wonderful smell. They have pretty pink flowers and a deep red bark. They also bud back well on old wood! What more could you ask?
They take well to pot culture and can handle mild frosts. They are also heat and drought tolerant. The folks in South Africa recommend repotting only when the tree is rootbound and shearing into the desired shape after flowering.
They do best with clip and grow training and a fast draining Bonsai soil. Don’t cut back past an active bud for best results. Repot in late spring. Colenema does not like “wet feet” so water when slightly dry. It is reported that they are resistant to most pests and diseases.
I am growing one indoors under T5 HO fluorescent lighting and it is doing very well.
Attention! You will need to provide shelter if temperatures drop below freezing!
